2012 Dodge Durango review - The Dodge Durango will be a car-based crossover vehicle for 2012. A redesigned Dodge Durango was expected before Chrysler hooked up with Italy's Fiat Auto in summer 2009 in a quick White House-brokered bankruptcy trip. Now we've seen spy photos of new-Durango prototypes and we're frankly surprised to see them. Though SUV demand in general has been way down since the Great Recession took hold, Durango sales are in the dumper, off a stunning 82 percent year-to-year in the first 11 months of 2009; 2008 sales weren't exactly great.
Durango models boast some of the most powerful engines on the road today. The standard engine, a 5.9-liter turbine that produces 245 horsepower and delivers 335 pounds-per-foot of torque, comes with an additional 5 horsepower and 10 pounds-per-foot of torque on Durango R/T models. The available Next Generation 4.7-liter Magnum V8 delivers even more power, producing 235 horsepower and 295 pounds-per-foot of torque provides even more power, making Durango one of the highest performing SUVs on the road today.
Several factors are at work here. First, the Durango is a traditional truck-type SUV in a market gone crazy for thriftier, more-rational car-based crossover wagons like Dodge's own Journey. Second, the bankruptcy and other negative news have created the widespread perception that Chrysler is a doomed cripple, leading many buyers to steer clear of the company's three brands for fear of being left in the lurch. No wonder 2009 group sales were down 38 percent through November, the worst loss in the American market. That, in turn, only increases pressure on Chrysler and Fiat to come up with new products that have a chance to sell well enough to save the bacon.
